The Spectrum of Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety is a normal human emotion, but when it becomes chronic, irrational, and debilitating, it transitions into a clinical disorder. Anxiety disorders are among the most common psychiatric conditions globally, deeply impacting a patient's occupational performance, social relationships, and overall quality of life.

The two most frequently treated conditions on our platform include:

• Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Characterized by persistent, excessive, and uncontrollable worry about daily events. Patients often experience physical symptoms such as muscle tension, fatigue, and severe sleep disturbances.
• Panic Disorder: Defined by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks. These are sudden periods of intense fear accompanied by palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, and a feeling of impending doom.

Pharmacological Interventions

Treatment for anxiety disorders typically involves a combination of psychotherapy (such as CBT) and medication. When acute symptom relief is required, physicians may prescribe fast-acting anxiolytics, such as Alprazolam (Xanax).

These medications belong to the benzodiazepine class. They function by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. This rapidly decreases abnormal electrical activity in the central nervous system, resulting in profound calming, sedative, and muscle-relaxant effects.
